Content: As challenging as it is to engage the identified client in treatment, it is often an even greater challenge to effectively engage family members. The unwillingness of significant others to participate in the treatment process has traditionally been described with words like “resistance” and “untreated co-dependency.” The types of clinical stances that have historically blocked impactful contact with family members will be discussed as well as therapeutic philosophy and interventions that have been found to be effective in engaging family members in a respectful and empowering manner.
